Tradiciones Latinas

Each country in South America has many traditions or “cábalas“, rituals to bring good luck. Some are very interesting, others are quite funny and I can say even embarrassing sometimes. However, I can give you my word that many people still do and believe in them.

cábalas de año nuevo
  • The most common one is to eat grapes at midnight. You have to eat 12, each of them represents a month and a wish.
  • Another famous one is to wear underwear in specific colours. The most famous ones are red, to wish for love, and yellow, to wish for money. It’s funny but stores usually get fully-equipped on yellow underwear this month.
  • Finally, one crazy cábala is to go to walk around with a piece of luggage or rucksack. Usually to the park nearby or just around the neighbourhood. It is said that this one means that you wish to travel more this new year.
